SPORTS: PK-3

Jessica's Week:

I love that we got in some super active learning play just before it gets too cold to be outside for long. I also wanted T to have a basic understanding of several sports I’m sure we will be watching lots of over the holidays with family and friends. But if your thinking this theme is just about rules of the game you’d be wrong. We spent a majority of our time focused on sportsmanship, taking turns, following directions from “the coach”, and how it takes a lot of practice/patience to succeed. My hope is that if she forgets all the “rules” of say tee-ball by next spring at least she’ll remember to give the other team a good game high five and not get discouraged when she strikes out.

The sports we explored in depth this week were: football, hockey, t-ball, basketball, soccer, and golf…one for each day. The possibilities are endless of course (and we talked about lots of other sports) but one per day was really all a three year old can absorb. We not only played each sport outdoors in a traditional fashion but also explored handheld mini-game versions, ways to integrate sports into spelling etc. I think Taegan's favorite part (besides the active play) was the crafts we created. Rolling golf balls to paint, gluing orange tissue paper to make a basketball, stringing football beads to make a necklace. I'd like to do another sports week sometime throughout the year and switch up the sports but this was a great start. I think it will help Taegan a lot when we start organized team playing if we continue to practice the basics she's already learned. At this point I have no idea what will interest her other than dance so our plan is to try out tee-ball and soccer. I'll let you know how it goes!
