Ana's Week

I can’t imagine a better follow up to a weekend all about Aria and her birthday than an “All About Me” unit, so of course that’s the unit we chose to do! Not only were we able to review concepts from last year, like an understanding of self, our number, and emotions, but we added in deeper concepts like how to show the fruits of the spirit in our lives and a study of the 5 senses. We started the week out with the simpler stuff, like reflection drawing, measuring, writing a book about Aria, and making a family tree, which was a good plan after a busy weekend we were still cleaning up from. We ended the week with the fruits of the spirit (though we read 9 Fruits Alive every day, and Aria was already reading it to me by the middle of the week) and the senses (which aligned with the day we went to the doctor and Aria had her hearing and vision test). Between pictures at gymnastics, a doctor’s appointment, playdates, and family visiting, we didn’t have a ton of time during the week, but we were able to hit all of the information we needed.

I absolutely loved the Princess Sofia All About Me book I stumbled across at the dollar store. We probably spent an hour coloring, writing (some of which Aria did herself), and talking about the things that Aria loves. It was revealing but fun, and a good learning tool for Aria. I also can’t speak highl enough of the (9 Fruits Alive book), not only because we read the book every day for 2 weeks and Aria loved it so much she could read it to me, but because it really dumbed down the fruits of the spirit in a great way for kids to learn and apply the concepts.
The most fun activities of the week involved food. The 5 senses taste test was a blast, and though Aria tried to cheat and see what the food was, she enjoyed the game. We also had a ton of fun making Mr. Potato Heads out of real potatoes, and then of course we used the potatoes to make stuffed baked potatoes because they couldn’t go to waste!

We introduced a new activity this week that we plan to repeat each week, which is Show and Tell. While this is something she would probably be doing in school, we decided to introduce our own Show and Tell not just so she wouldn’t miss out on it but also because Aria needs a little practice with public speaking. At home and with friends she is a chatterbox, but sometimes in public or on the phone she mumbles, so we are working on encouraging projection, confidence, and speaking clearly. I’ll update you in a few weeks as to if there has been any progress!

Aria is getting to the age where we are becoming buddies on top of the mother/daughter relationship, so it has been a joy spending the week celebrating and talking about all of the things I love about Aria (or that she loves about herself), while also encouraging her to show the fruits of the spirit and continue to better herself always. I’ll have to start a new trend of reflecting on and making a book about what Aria loves on her birthday each year to see what changes she goes through in a year!

Jessica's Week

It’s basically been “birthday month” around here this October. We started the month with an early  party for Taegan, gave her the gift of a special pony pals riding camp,  had a unicorn birthday photoshoot, and celebrated in countless other little ways. This wasn’t really something I did intentionally, the timing of everything just kind of worked out to that. Still, I thought it would be special for her to stretch it out with lots of different celebrating activities but it turned out to be a bit much for everyone. The never ending “all about her” theme has led to a few attitude problems, namely acting out whenever T isn’t getting all her wishes met. As a result I tried to focus this week not only on her but her relations to people and the world around her. We talked about healthy expressions of emotions toward others, family relationships, taking on responsibilities and life skills to gain independence and making a difference in the lives of those around us.
We also took time to review some basics and add in new details. As spelling her first name becomes easier we are starting to work on our last name as well. The name folder https://playtolearnpreschool.us/namefolders/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+PlayToLearnPreschool+(Play+to+Learn+Preschool) from "play to learn" has been an invaluable resource for us and it was easy to create a second folder using our last name instead of her first.  Its been a year since we attempted learning a phone number (last year was not successful at all) but I am pleased to report after taking Ana’s advice and singing the number to Frere A Jacques a million times or so this week, Taegan almost has it down! Its not always 100% correct but I think if she really needed to tell someone how to contact us she could.
We had a LOT of fun doing the same all about me printable book we did last year as well. It was really cool to look back and see that although her favorite color is the same (blue) her handprint is bigger and the self portrait of our family looks a lot closer to reality than it used to ;). I think we will continue to fill out this booklet for at least the next few years so we can have fun comparing with the past.
